The stranded sailors would have no doubt frozen that night if their vessel had not been seen. Local farmers, however, did see it. For generations, their families had learnt how to scale down the cliffs on ropes to collect bird eggs, and by using this technique, they abseiled metres feet to the rescue. Along with many seabirds, the beach is home to hundreds of seals. Two farmers lived there with their wives, but one fell in love with the spouse of the other and she with him.

Though no one knows exactly what happened, their original partners were found dead, and they were later sentenced to death. This dramatic event later served as an inspiration for Icelandic author Gunnar Gunnarsson's masterful novel The Black Cliffs. Creative Commons. Radcliffe certainly has a skill of capturing the essence of Iceland and its people. The plot of the Killer's Guide to Iceland was alright. TKGTI took a while to get started, which initially was fine with me because Radcliffe was doing such a great job at transporting me back to Iceland. When the ball of the plot finally got moving however, I felt like I was reading a mediocre mystery. If not, there are better thrillers and mysteries out there.

His new partner's mother and daughter don't seem that keen on him, and he struggles with the strangeness of Iceland - the persistent light, the food dried fish, rotten shark, puffins. And then strange parts of Birna's life re-appear. Jun 10, VeganMedusa rated it liked it Shelves: bc-copy , mystery , iceland. Not a bad thriller, but the Icelandic setting was what made it that much more enjoyable for me. Top marks for using the proper Icelandic runic letters and accents note to other publishers: How bloody hard is it, really? Some nice Icelandic history and trivia thrown in, although it made conversations seem awkward, and Icelanders like they want to educate you about Iceland in every conversation.

One mistake though, Hekla last erupted in , not I was there! Oct 18, Claire Davies rated it really liked it. I mostly bought this book because of my interest in Iceland. However, it feels like the author wrote this book with a 'Top 10 fun facts about Iceland' next to him, which he has shoe-horned into the storyline. Otherwise I enjoyed the book greatly as a bit of light reading. May 30, Helen Auld rated it it was ok Shelves: read The basic premise of this story could have been good but the main character was too self obsessed and didn't take various situations seriously enough.

It was hard to have concern for other characters safety when was all me, me, me and talking about the landscape. If I'd wanted a geology lesson I would have watched a documentary.

Ian Watson. The main character in this novel is a Scottish dot-com entrepreneur who sells his company and moves to Iceland to live with an Icelandic geologist he meets by chance in Glasgow. But she too turns out to have a more interesting past than he bargained for. Radcliffe did his homework and much of the description of Iceland reads quite true to life.
